It offers a unique opportunity for both adults and children to discover and appreciate the remarkable work of this renowned Greek sculptor.

THE CRYPT OF SAINT PHILOTHEI

The crypt was discovered by chance in 1934 during quarrying activities. It is believed that Saint Philothei used this underground space as a place of refuge and prayer. Notably, an underground tunnel once connected the crypt to the Kalogreza Convent, which she had established on her family’s estate.

The village of Nea Alexandria was renamed Philothei in her honor following the crypt’s discovery.

It is said that the crypt was a natural cave which the Sanit transformed into a small chapel for prayers.

There are also accounts suggesting that the crypt was created by Saint Philothei herself and served as a secret refuge for her and the other nuns of the monastery, providing a means of escape during the brutal raids carried out by the occupying Ottoman forces.

Right beside the crypt, a small church was initially built, and visitors can still see the narrow corridor that leads down to the crypt. Over time, this unique site was gradually transformed into the space we see today, preserving its spiritual and historical significance.

Philothei was born as Revoula Benizelou in Athens on November 21, 1522, to the illustrious and wealthy Benizelos family. Her parents were Angelos Benizelos and Syrigi Palaiologina, both from old Byzantine families.
